The Seattle Seahawks opened up with the 2014 NFL season with a win over the Green Bay Packers last Thursday night. It was an impressive outing for the defending Super Bowl champions. From there, the rest of the league kicked off on Sunday and Monday to the high anticipation of fans across the country.
Those teams that began the season with a victory will look to continue their winning ways, while those who lost will try to right the ship. Teams that start 0-1 on the season only make the playoffs 25 percent of the time.
Teams that start 0-2 face an even bigger uphill climb.
With that, let’s take a look at some of the upcoming matchups in Week 2, beginning with the Thursday night showdown in the AFC North between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens.
Obviously the news of the week centers on Ray Rice, who is now the former running back for the Ravens after the team terminated his contract following the release of the video in the elevator that showed the running back punching his future wife in the face. It will certainly be a distraction for Baltimore this week, but perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise that this is a short week of preparation. The focus has to be on the game.
Despite the challenges, the Ravens are still field-goal favorites at home according to Bovada Sportsbook’s Week 2 NFL point spreads. Baltimore is one of the teams that will try to avoid the 0-2 start, while Pittsburgh narrowly blew a 24-point lead to the Cleveland Browns.
Then on Sunday, there are plenty of matchups to look forward to.
The Carolina Panthers stole a win in Tampa Bay with backup Derrick Anderson at quarterback, and will face the Detroit Lions. The Lions looked very impressive at home against the New York Giants, but take to the road in this one. As such, Carolina is getting the three-point edge over Detroit. To win though, the Panthers will have to keep a close eye on No.81 lining up on the outside.
In the AFC East, the only team without a win is the New England Patriots (that felt weird to write). But it’s true, and the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins will meet in an early divisional contest. The Dolphins are the favorite, coming off of a great win at home over the Patriots. The betting line is just one point, which is obviously one of the closest spreads of the week.
After a thrilling victory in OT over the New Orleans Saints, the Atlanta Falcons hit the road to take on the Cincinnati Bengals in one of the marquee matchups of the weekend. The Bengals are actually five-point favorites over the Falcons in this one, which is a bit surprising given the fact that Matt Ryan threw for 450 yards and three touchdowns. But the oddsmakers are high on the Bengals this season, so this could go a long way to determining the season for both teams.
The Sunday night contest matches the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers, with the 40ers touchdown favorites. Then on Monday night, the Philadelphia Eagles travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts, with Indy a field-goal favorite.
