The featherweight title in the UFC will be on the line this week in Las Vegas on Saturday night when Jose aldo takes on Frankie Edgar. While there has not been one second of one round in this fight yet, there are many out there thinking that this could be an early candidate for the fight of the year.
UFC President Dana White had been asking Edgar to drop to the 145 pound featherweight division to provide some intrigue and the potential for fantastic fights.
Now we have one.
Edgar brings his 15-3-1 record overall and a 9-3-1 UFC record to the table to battle for the title against Aldo, who is 21-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in his UFC bouts.
Edgar would probably be favored against every featherweight in the division, with the exception of the fighter he will be facing on Saturday night. He comes in as the underdog to Aldo on Bovada Sportsbook.
UFC 156 Betting Odds available at Bovada have installed Aldo as a -210 favorite to defend his title over Edgar. The line is pretty close though, as a testament to how strong both fighters are. Edgar is the underdog, but is going off at +170 on the payout. A wager on Aldo will profit $1 for every $2.10 wagered, while a bet on Edgar will make $1.70 on every $1 laid down for him to pull off the upset.
Aldo is the most powerful striker at the lightweight division, but Edgar will have the edge in speed and his elusiveness. The fighter who can best enforce their strengths on the other will have the best chance to win the match.
This is not the only fight on the schedule for UFC 156. In fact, there are a number of compelling fights, including Rashad Evans and Antonio Nogueira, which will take place right before the main event between aldo and Edgar.
