Dancing with the Stars season 16 celebrated its season finale this week with the last competition airing on Monday night, followed by the results show on Tuesday. Each of the four couples performed three dances: something the judges selected based on the couple’s abilities, a cha-cha relay and a freestyle routine.
Kicking off round 1 of the show, Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff were the first act to make their way to the ballroom stage. The couple scored 27 points followed by Aly and Mark’s amazing samba that earned the couple 28 points. For Kellie and Derek Hough, the judges selected a quickstep. After conquering their routine, Pickler is awarded 30 points. Last to dance in round 1, Zendaya and Val also took on a samba. After Carrie Ann shared her happiness over Zendaya’s control in heels, the young dancer was also awarded 30 points on the leader board.
Next up for the four couple’s took on the cha-cha relay. Each couple was given 40 seconds before Carrie Ann, Bruno and Len ranked their abilities with the first-place team set to receive five points, the second-place team earned four points, the third-place team was given three points, and the fourth-place team received just two points. Kellie and Derek kicked off round 2 first with Jacoby making his way into the competition followed by Aly and Mark’s attempts, who ended up dancing with Karina. Finally, Zendaya and Val enter the relay and appear to be the top scorers of the round.
In the last round of the evening, all four gear up to present their freestyle routine. Jacoby decided to go with a Mardi Gras theme with tap dancers and a band. Aly’s follows up Jacoby’s performance by showing off her gymnastic skills. Kellie counters by showcasing a routine filled with spins and extensions. Last, Zendaya performs a hip-hop number backed by a large crowd of children.
All four of the remaining couples did an excellent job, but by Tuesday Aly and Mark were the first couple to be sent home during the first half of the 2 hour season finale that featured the return of the entire season 16 dancers. The celebrities all performed a number with Wynonna Judd treating the audience to a special musical performance.
After anxiously awaiting the season’s winner, Kellie Pickler was declared the Dancing with the Stars victor! The country singer came out on top with high marks against Zendaya, this season’s runner-up and Jacoby, who earned third place in the competition.
Those who got in on the odds to win the season for the last show and bet on Pickler got paid out 13/10. She was second on the odds behind Coleman, so it was a minor upset.
