We already know that Novak Djokovic will be in the Australian Open final, looking to successfully defend his title for a second time in a row.
Now, the only question remains is who his playing competitor will be in that final?
It will come down to the Australian Open men’s semifinal between two familiar names in Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Federer has has plenty of championship success at the Australian Open in his career, while Murray is looking to win his first Murray of course if the last player to win a Grand Slam, capturing the 2012 U.S. Open for his first Major title. It capped off what was a fantastic ending to his season, following the gold medal win in London as well.
It’s enough to set Murray as the favorite over Federer on the betting odds, which is the first time that this has happened when the two are paired together, despite the fact that Murray actually has a winning record against Federer at 10-9 in 19 career matches.
Murray is a -155 favorite on Australian Open Betting Odds available at Bovada Sportsbook. The line is very close though, as Federer is just on the opposite side of the payout, going off at +120 on the payout.
Murray has gotten the better of Federer on the last big stages that the two were paired, including the U.S. Open and in the Olympics semifinals.
A win by either Federer or Murray would put them in the Final, where it is likely that they would be the underdog to Djokovic. Djokovic won the Australian Open in 2011 and last year, now eyeing a three-peat.
This semifinal match between Federer and Murray will take place early Friday morning at 3:30am ET. With the time difference in Australia that will be late afternoon on into the early evening.
ESPN2 will have live coverage of the entire match.
