The regular season on the PGA Tour is over, and the FedEx Cup Playoffs are set to get underway on Thursday for The Barclays. This is traditionally the first event in the playoffs, as the top-125 players on the FedEx Cup standings are eligible to participate.
Rory McIlroy comes into the 2014 FedEx Cup Playoffs as the top point-getter, thanks to three-straight wins that included two Major Championships (British Open & PGA Championship).
McIlroy’s lead isn’t as much as you might think though having won two Majors and a World Golf Championships event over the last month. In fact, it’s less than 100 points over Jimmy Walker, who has won two times on the PGA Tour this season, albeit early in the year. Walker has also played in 10 more events than McIlroy, but has played well enough to potentially play a real factor down the stretch.
But as we all know, the points for the FedEx Cup Playoffs increase exponentially for the remaining tournaments. Hypothetically the 125th-ranked player can still win the FedEx Cup.
The field will be trimmed by 25 players by the time The Barclays concludes, with the top-100 advancing next week. That means though players ranked 101-125 face some real pressure to perform this week.
It’s those players at the top of the rankings who are favored on The Barclays betting odds available at Bovada Sportsbook. To no surprise, it’s McIlroy who is favored to get the victory. A wager on the No.1 ranked player in the world heading into Thursday is paying out 4/1. That is nearly four times the favorites as the next-closest player, Adam Scott at 14/1. Scott enters as the second-ranked player in the world, but hasn’t been in contention over the last several weeks.
Behind the top-two players comes Henrik Stenson (16/1), Justin Rose (20/1), and the man who almost won the PGA Championship Phil Mickelson (20/1).
A name that you do not see anywhere is Tiger Woods. And you won’t for the rest of the year. Woods didn’t qualify for the playoffs and is back to recovering from his back surgery after returning too soon.
One player to watch this week is Rickie Fowler. He is the only player this season to finish in the top-five in all four Majors. He finished runner-up twice, and appears to be ready to take that next step. Winning The Barclays and going on to win the FedEx Cup is a real possibility. At 20/1, oddsmakers believe that Fowler is a big threat to do that.
