Week 1 in the 2014 NFL Season kicks off Thursday night in Seattle as the Seahawks host the Green Bay Packers. Seattle is arguably the best home team in the NFL, and the betting line reflects that this week despite the fact that Aaron Rodgers and company come in as one of the top Super Bowl favorites in the preseason.
Seattle has been installed as six-point favorites over Green Bay at home, where they went 7-1 straight up last year. This is one of the larger betting lines for the Week 1 slate of games.
The largest point spread though comes in Jacksonville, where the Jaguars are double-digit underdogs to the Philadelphia Eagles, with the game sitting at 11 points. It’s an interesting betting line considering the fact that these will be the first meaningful snaps that either will take. Week 1 spreads probably make oddsmakers nervous because they don’t have much to go on except for last year and the preseason.
The narrowest margin in Week 1 comes in the AFC North, where the Baltimore Ravens will take on the Cincinnati Bengals. Both teams have aspirations of winning the division and making a run in the postseason. Of the two, it’s probably the Bengals who most believe has the best opportunity. But Cincinnati is actually the underdog on the road at 1.5 points to the Ravens. Expect this one to be a hard-fought affair with no love lost between either.
Other games where the point spread comes in at a field goal or less includes the Atlanta Falcons at home in the underdog role to the New Orleans Saints. The Falcons underachieved a year ago and look like they are a bit healthier, especially at the wide receiver position. Atlanta is a three-point underdog though to Drew Brees and the Saints. These two teams are the favorites in the NFC South, and the winner will get the first leg up. Getting an early win at home over their rival might prove to be more important for the Falcons in this matchup.
Arguably the biggest matchup of the week puts Peyton Manning against his old team once more. Denver will host Indianapolis, as Andrew Luck enters his third NFL season. The Broncos are the favorites to win the Super Bowl this season, but will have to overcome the loss of Wes Welker for at least four games. And with the concussion issue lingering, even when he comes back from suspension he might be ineffective.
Monday night features a pair of Monday Night Football Games. First on the schedule are the Detroit Lions and the New York Giants. Then in the West, the San Diego Chargers matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, who many believe could be the dark horse in the NFC.
