Florida’s Scottie Wilbekin Favored To Win 2014 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player

Scottie WilbekinThe 2014 NCAA Tournament is down to the Sweet 16, and those games will begin tonight and go on into Friday. Then on the weekend, the Elite 8 action will take place as teams will matchup with a trip to Dallas and the Final Four on the line.

Throughout the tournament, players have had to come up big and create opportunities for their teams to move forward. That challenge is about to get more difficult as each round progresses. The players that can step up the biggest will be the ones cutting down the nets in April at Cowboys Stadium.

When looking at the betting lines to win the 2014 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Award, it’s not a surprise that the favorites hail from the teams at the top of the list to win as well. Florida is certainly well represented as the No.1 overall seed and top favorite heading into the Sweet 16. Other teams like Michigan State, Louisville, and Arizona are right there as well.

At the top of the mall is Florida’s Scottie Wilbekin, the leader of the No.1 seeded Gators. The point guard is the offensive leader, orchestrating the Bill Donovan very efficiently. Wilbekin put up 21 points in the win over Pittsburgh last weekend, shooting 9-15 from the floor. More importantly, he turned the ball over just once. In fact, Wilbekin has just two turnovers total in two games. Against UCLA upcoming in the round of 16, Florida will need to execute on offense because the Bruins are very good on offense themselves and can put up some points. Wilbekin is slated at 7/1 according to Bovada Sportsbook to win the MOP award.

Behind Wilbekin is a player that has plenty of tournament experience in Louisville’s Russ Smith. As the point guard of the defending national champions, Smith knows what it takes to win a title. Louisville has a tough matchup with Kentucky in the Sweet 16, and Smith will likely have to play a big role. At 8/1, Smith is right behind Wilbekin as the MOP favorite. Smith is a different type of guard than Wilbekin, and is a little more out of control with the ball. But he can produce big time plays shooting the ball and driving and is a dynamic threat lead Louisville to a second-straight title.

Adreian Payne of Michigan State has really played well through the NCAA Tournament thus far. The 6’10 forward put up 41 points in the first round against Delaware. He score 12 against Harvard to get to the Sweet 16, but is certainly the key piece to the now-healthy Spartans as they make a tournament push. Payne is slated at 10/1 to win the MOP along with fellow Michigan State teammate Gary Harris. It’s clear that Bovada really likes Michigan State to make a run. The Spartans face No.1 seed Virginia in the Sweet 16, and would get the winner of UConn and Iowa State in the Elite 8. Of course, we are all looking ahead to a potential showdown with Florida in the Final Four.
