The anticipation is high as Saturday brings yet another opportunity for the first Triple Crown winner since 1978. All eyes will be on the 2014 Belmont stakes in New York as California Chrome tries to close out his victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with one in the Belmont.
We all know the statistics heading into the race. Affirmed was the last to win the Triple Crown nearly four decades ago. There have been 11 horses since that have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown. All have failed in the grueling 1.5-mile Belmont that tests all phases of both thoroughbred and jockey.
California Chrome drew the No.2 post position this week and will start on the inside. While that would be a problem in the Kentucky Derby, there are just 11 horses in the 2014 Belmont field, so getting out of the rail shouldn’t be very difficult in the beginning of the race. With this the longest race of the three, it’s arguably the one that requires the most patience and strategy.
History has shown that the Belmont favors the closer; the horse that can dig deep and give the best effort down the home stretch. California Chrome has proven that he can win in all different types of races.
As expected, the betting lines to win the 2014 Belmont are in full swing since the post positions were drawn. We knew that California Chrome would be the favorite heading into the race, it was simply a matter of where oddsmakers were going to start with the payout.
Bovada Sportsbook has California Chrome at better than even money odds, going off at 10/11. Expect action to be placed up until post time Saturday afternoon. The payout could fluctuate significantly depending on how the money is placed. Conventional thought is that the majority of wagers will be placed on California Chrome to win. The big profit will be made on those betting against California Chrome to finish out of the money, paving the way for one of the horses with a higher payout.
The closest contender to California Chrome according to Bovada is Ride on Curlin, installed at 13/2. There are several right behind as well though, with Tonalist at 7/1, General A Road at 8/1, and Commanding Curve at 9/1.
These odds at Bovada will be in the Futures section until Saturday, at which point the betting lines will shift to the Racebook for the daily horse betting lines.
