The biggest category of the night at the Academy Awards is Best Picture. A culmination of achievement in the motion picture industry, the Best Picture category brings together all of the elements that make a film great. For the 2014 Academy Awards, there are nine films up for the award.
The 2014 Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2 from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The final award of the night will be the Best Picture.
While there are nine films nominated for the award, there is one film that has separated itself on the betting lines to win Best Picture according to Bovada Sportsbook.
That would be 12 Years A Slave. The film chronicles the journey of a black man born free in New York but kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841 in Washington D.C. For 12 years, Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) was a slave in Louisiana. The film is based off of the true story ’12 Years A Slave’ that was a memoir by the man the story is based. The screenplay was written by John Ridley and produced by Brad Pitt. Upon release, the film received fantastic reviews and was critically acclaimed.
Betting odds to win Best Picture at Bovada have installed 12 Years A Slave as a 1/5 favorite to win. This sets it well in front of the other either pictures nominated.
The closest film is Gravity, a science fiction film set in space starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. The two play astronauts attempting to return to earth following a mission, but encounter big problems when the space shuttle begins to fall apart. This space thriller made over $700 million and broke barriers in the how it was filmed. The visual effects are truly astounding and instantly set this film in an elite category. At 4/1, Gravity is second on the list of favorites, but still well behind 12 Years A Slave. Director Alfonso Cuaron is a runaway favorite to win Best Director however.
The odds jump up considerably to the next film. The story of two men charged with initiating a sting operation in the 1970s on politicians received a warm reception. American Hustle is chock full of big stars, and as a comedy that incorporated plenty of drama it is very unique. Bovada has still film set at 12/1 to win. It would be an upset, but it is not out of the question.
The Other films nominated for Best Picture are further down the list. They include The Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf of Wall Street, Captain Phillips, Her, Nebraska, and Philomena.
Betting lines for all of the films can be found below courtesy of LatestBettingOdds.com and Bovada. Bets can be made on the category through Sunday as the Oscars air at 8 pm ET.
