With Orb winning the Kentucky Derby, the thoughts and expectations instantly shifted to the 2013 Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown. Orb will get going during the second leg of the Triple Crown this Saturday.
The field for the Preakness will be considerably smaller than the Kentucky Derby, with only 10 thoroughbreds competing at this point. The field is always the smallest of the three Triple Crown races, but this one is smaller than most years. It has to do with the number of top candidates ready to race.
Orb headlines the betting odds to win the 2013 Preakness Stakes as the Kentucky Derby winner. But Bovada Sportsbook has taken that a step further and set a couple of Preakness prop odds as well. These odds center around Orb and his finish at the Preakness.
The first asks whether or not he will win the Preakness. The odds that he will are set at even money, with the odds against him winning going off at -140 on the moneyline. That would be a $1.40 wager profiting $1. This is slightly different than the overall odds to win the Preakness that will be formed for every thoroughbred in the field. This wager is a simple yes or no, where other payouts are not available.
Will Orb win the Preakness Stakes
But it doesn’t stop there.
There is also a betting line for the top-three finish by the Kentucky Derby winner. Preakness prop odds definitely favor Orb to tab a top-three finish, going off at 1 to 4 on the betting line to finish that high. The odds against it are set at 5 to 2. The fact that Orb was the favorite in the Kentucky Derby and then went on to win only exacerbates how big of a favorite he will be in the Preakness. We aren’t talking about a 30 to 1 longshot who got the Derby victory.
Will Orb Finish in the Top 3 at the Preakness Stakes
Obviously with Orb being the favorite in the Preakness there is talk of a Triple Crown. A Triple Crown betting line for Orb coming into this week has been formed at Bovada, with the odds going off at 5 to 2 that he will, and 1 to 4 that he won’t. This line will be up until the Preakness, and should Orb win that, then it would spill over into the Belmont.
Will Orb win the Triple Crown?
But we can bet that betting line will shift quite a bit should Orb break through and win the second leg on Saturday.
The 2013 Preakness Stakes will be held this Saturday, May 18th, with coverage on NBC taking place at 6pm ET.
