2013 West Region Seen As Two-Team Race Between Gonzaga And Ohio State, According To Bracket Odds

Filed under: NCAA Basketball Betting Odds |

Gonzaga BulldogsThe West Regional in the 2013 NCAA Tournament is certainly compelling, if nothing else because of the fact that the Gonzaga Bulldogs are the No.1 seed out of a mid-major conference in the WCC. The Bulldogs ended the regular season as the No.1 ranked team in the country, ascending to that position for the first time in history.

And keeping with firsts, they have never been a No.1 seed in the tournament. But now as the Zags prepare to try and get to Atlanta for the Final Four, we take a step back and look at their chances to do so.

In terms of teams who stand in the way of Gonzaga to get to the Final Four, it starts right at the top with the No.2 seed in the region, the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes captured the Big Ten conference tournament over the weekend, and were rewarded accordingly.

Ohio State and Gonzaga are neck and neck at the top of the list of favorites in the West Region at Bovada Sportsbook, with the Zags getting the slight edge to reach the Georgia Dome. A wager on Gonzaga is paying out 12/5, which is slightly over a 2 to 1 profit margin. The Buckeyes aren’t far behind, paying out 11/4, which is just under a 3 to 1 margin.

There is certainly some separation between these top-two seeds and the rest of the pack, but that is pretty typical of NCAA Tournament betting lines.

No.3 seed New Mexico comes in behind the top-two favorites, as the odds go chalk down the first three. The Lobos are paying out 5/1.

The real surprise comes next, with the Pittsburgh Panthers as the No.8 seed sitting in fourth on the odds to win the West Region. Oddsmakers obviously lean towards the possibility of the Panthers upsetting Gonzaga in the third round, which would pave the way for a potential trip. That would still leave a possible showdown with the Buckeyes though in the Elite 8, not to mention No.12 seed Ole Miss won the SEC tournament.
