Jimmie John narrowly missed out on the best start of his career this past weekend out in Phoenix, finishing second to Carl Edwards at the Subway Fresh Fit 500. Had Johnson been able to take the checkered flag, it would have been back-to-back wins to start out 2013, led of course by the opening win at the Daytona 500.
But the day belonged to Edwards, who held off Johnson, Denny Hamlin, and 2012 Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski.
Now, the Sprint Cup Series moves forward to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the running of the Kobalt Tools 400.
And last week’s winner in Edwards has a solid history at this event, winning in 2011 and in 2008. But so to does Johnson, who won back in 2010. It was Tony Stewart who won last season and comes in as the defending champion.
Betting odds for the Kobalt Tools 400 have been released, with Johnson at the very top of the list of favorites. The Daytona 500 winner, and Subway Fresh Fit 500 runner-up has been set at 13/2 to win for the second time this season.
Stewart and Denny Hamlin are set at 17/2, right behind Johnson on the odds. Stewart managed a top-10 finish in Phoenix last week, finishing in 8th. Hamlin grabbed a third place finish behind Edwards and Johnson.
Despite never having won the Kobalt Tools 400, NASCAR oddsmakers feel that Hamlin will be a top contender coming into the week.
Keselowski tabbed a fourth place finish last week, and is slated with betting odds at 9/1. Kyle Busch comes in with those same odds, having won this race back in the 2009 Sprint Cup season.
The Kobalt Tools 400 has been run every year since it’s first edition back in 1998. Drivers will race around the track 267 times for a total of 400.5 miles.
The 2013 Kobalt Tools 400 will be held on Sunday, March 10 beginning at 3pm ET with live coverage picked up by FOX.
