The 2013 Kentucky Derby might be the highlight of the week on Saturday, but those at Churchill Downs today (Friday) will be treated to a host a races including the 2013 Kentucky Oaks, the premiere race for fillies.
Originally scheduled to have 11 compete for the title, the unfortunate scratch of Flashy Gray has narrowed the field (and the odds as a result) down to just ten. Still, the top favorites to win the 2013 Kentucky Oaks remain in the field.
As we take a look at the race lines (below) as post time nears at 5:45pm ET (about 3 hours from publish), it’s clear that the three fillies pegged as the favorites at the start of the week remain in those positions.
Dreaming Of Julia has a slight separation from the rest of the pack, and has been tabbed as the overall favorite to the Kentucky Oaks, set at 3 to 1 (+300) in Bovada’s Racebook. The filly has nabbed a couple of big victories in 2013, headlined by her runaway win at the Gulfstream Oaks.
The two fillies just behind Dreaming Of Julia on the betting line are installed with identical 7 to 2 payouts (+350). Beholder and Unlimited Budget will be right next to each other out of the gate running in the third and fourth positions respectively. With Dreaming Of Julia starting in the #8 gate, these two will be able to get down to the rail quicker than the favorite.
As we work our way down the list, Midnight Lucky comes in next at 9 to 2 (+450). This payout is not very far off the pace of the leaders and starting out of the #2 gate surely isn’t going to hurt Rafael Bejarano’s chances of claiming victory on Midnight Lucky.
Rounding out the top-five favorites is Close Hatches at 6 to 1 (+600). Coming out of the last gate (#11), Joel Rosario should be able to get a clean start… how long it takes to get down to the rail is another story.
Close Hatches is probably the last filly on the list we can consider to be one of the race favorites before we get into the longshots for the second half of the field. That’s because we see the payouts jump up rather significantly as we go further down the list.
Rose To Gold sits at 15 to 1, with Princess Of Sylmar and Silsita both posting at 20 to 1 (+2000). Bettors looking for an even higher payout can consider Seaneen Girl at 30 to 1 (+3000), or Pure Fun at that same line.
Again, post time for the 2013 Kentucky Oaks will come at 5:45pm ET on Friday. It’s important because anyone wanting to bet will have up until then to get their wagers in… once they’re in the gate, you’re too late.
