The 2013 Home Run Derby will be held on Monday, July 15th from Citi Field in New York City, home of the New York Mets. Eight of the best long-ball hitters in Major League Baseball will walk up to the plate and try to claim the title of one of the great traditions during the All Star break.
There are four competing players from both the National and American Leagues. Each League has a captain. For the American League, that is Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees. For the National League, hometown player David Wright of the Mets is the captain.
Joining Cano as member of the AL Home Run Derby team is Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles who leads MLB in home runs so far this season. Also on the team are Prince Fielder of the Detroit Tigers and Yoenis Céspedes of the Oakland Athletics. Cespedes is just the fourth-ever non-All Star player to be a participant in the Home Run Derby.
On the NL side of things, Wright is joined by a pair of Colorado Rockies in Michael Cuddyer and Carlos Gonzalez. Rounding out the team is Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals, who will no doubt be a popular contestant.
The 2013 Home Run Derby will air on ESPN at 8pm.
