On Labor Day night in college football two ACC coastal teams will square off in a very important match up right out of the gate for both. The Virginia Tech Hokies will host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
The Hokies come into the 2012 college football season pegged as the favorites to win the Coastal division and reach the ACC championship game. Virginia Tech is behind only Florida State on the overall ACC odds.
On the other side of the field for Georgia Tech, they are picked behind Virginia Tech and Miami in the division, but can quickly change that position with a big win in this opener.
It’s Virginia Tech who is getting the edge from oddsmakers to open with a big conference and division win though. The Hokies are going off as 7.5-point favorites over the Yellow Jackets on College Football Week 1 betting odds available at Bovada Sportsbook. To cover, Virginia Tech will need to win by at least eight points. A loss by a touchdown or less by Georgia Tech would give the Yellow Jackets the cover.
There is no doubt that Lane Stadium at night has given Virginia Tech the edge, but so too do the players on the field. Led by quarterback Logan Thomas, the Hokies look primed to make another impressive run in 2012. But outside of Thomas and the offense, it’s the defense that will really try to shine bright this season. Virginia Tech ranked in the top-10 nationally in 2011 in both yards allowed and points allowed. The Hokies get after the quarterback on defense, tying for first with Florida State with 41 sacks.
Of course, with Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense, it could make things more challenging with match ups. Paul Johnson’s scheme racks up massive yards on the ground, as the Yellow Jackets will try to run over the Hokies. They ranked No.2 in the country in rushing yards last season with over 315 yards per game.
This will definitely be a fun matchup to watch on Monday night. The winner of this game has gone on to play in the ACC Championship game each of the last seven seasons.
This one will kick off at 8pm ET, with coverage on ESPN. Check out these betting odds and more below as seen on Bovada.
