Oddsmakers were certainly more cautious coming into this season than they were in the last one when they announced the Philadelphia Eagles as the team to beat in the NFC, and a top Super Bowl favorite to go along with. And while Philadelphia is still picked as one of the favorites, the ‘Dream Team’ has something to prove in 2012.
Philadelphia will open the regular season on the road against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday afternoon in Week 1.
And while the expectations are high for the Eagles, the same cannot be said for the Browns. Despite being at home in Week 1, Cleveland is set as the big underdog going into this match up.
Eagles vs Browns NFL Week 1 Betting Odds available at Bovada Sportsbook have set Philadelphia as nine-point favorites over Cleveland on the road. Philadelphia will cover this line with a double-digit margin of victory. If the Browns can make it a one possession game, they will cover the betting line. Essentially oddsmakers are asking the bettor to make a wager on whether or not this will be at least a two possession win for Philadelphia.
Both the Eagles and Browns ended the 2011 season hot against the spread, winning their last four. But with new personnel, it does make it a bit harder to play off of recent betting trends for Week 1 of the season.
The Eagles should win this game, as they are simply more talented on both sides of the ball. But the big question for Philadelphia is the health of quarterback Michael Vick. Vick had some injury scares during the preseason. Really, it’s just the nature of his type of play. For the Eagles to make a run at the Super Bowl this season, he will have to stay healthy.
Cleveland has a new quarterback under center this season in rookie Brandon Weeden. While he may be a rookie though, he is 29 years old. So as far as maturity on the field, we expect Weeden to be ahead of the curve.
It will actually be a pair of rookies in the offensive backfield for the Browns. Running back Trent Richardson was the No.3 overall selection in April’s draft, with big things expected from him. But we still don’t know what to expect from Clevand. We should learn a lot about this offense against the Eagles on Sunday.
Philadelphia and Cleveland kick off at 1pm ET on Sunday, with coverage on CBS.
