The Oakland Raiders did not end their 2011 NFL campaign well dropping four of their final five games after sitting at 7-4 heading into this stretch. The San Diego Chargers did fare well to round out the year doing just the opposite of the Raiders and winning four of their final five.
Both finished with 8-8 records and both ended the season without a postseason appearance.
In Week 1 Monday Night Football action, these two will begin where they ended last season as Oakland will host San Diego at Oakland-Alamenda County Coliseum.
These two split their two meetings from a year ago with the Chargers dropping the first 24-17 but winning the final game of the year against the Raiders 38-26.
It has been ten years since the Raiders have made a postseason appearance or even finished with a winning record. But this season might be the one where that run ends.
However, one thing needs to occur and that is running back Darren McFadden remaining healthy all season. He has yet to play all 16 game in a season during his four year career. But the fact remains that when he is healthy, the Raiders are much better off.
In addition, Oakland will benefit greatly from having Carson Palmer for the entire year. Now with a year under his belt in the system, a lot is expected from their quarterback.
For the Chargers it has been three years since they made it into postseason play. The offense has been consistent under quarterback Philip Rivers. But they will be without leading rusher Ryan Matthews for the game as he is out still not fully recovered from a broken clavicle. Their defense is what needed upgrading.
Bovada Sportsbook has fielded their NFL Week 1 Betting Odds and have installed the Raiders as 1-point favorites. The OVER/UNDER in points is set at 46 1/2.
Coverage for the Oakland vs San Diego matchup is set to begin at 10:15 pm ET with coverage on ESPN.
