An 8-8 record after all was said and done just wasn’t enough to get the Dallas Cowboys into the playoffs. They were 7-4 heading into December and then the wheels came off as they dropped four of their last five games.
Turning things around in 2012 is what owner Jerry Jones has greatly alluded to and it all begins on Wednesday night for the opening game of the 2012 NFL season as the Cowboys go on the road to face the New York Giants.
Getting the season going against the defending Super Bowl champions might be a tall task for Dallas, especially on the road, but one they have been anticipating for obvious reasons
Dallas faced the Giants twice last season and both times came away with losses. In fact, their defense was miserable in those two losses as they gave up an average of 34 points against the worst rushing attack in the NFL.
But that second loss in the season finale has got to be what has been weighing on the minds of the Cowboys. Both the Cowboys and Giants went into the game with 8-7 records, but the Giants pulled out the win and clinched the final playoff spot. And now, the Cowboys return to that same field to open up 2012 with revenge on their minds.
It’s obvious how the Giants fared so well against Dallas a year ago and that was the play of Eli Manning and his slew of playmakers on the outside.
For Dallas, it doesn’t look good for tight end Jason Witten suiting up for the game with his spleen injury. He might sit this one out as to give more healing time with a possible return in Week 2.
The Cowboys will go as their quarterback Tony Romo goes and not having his safety net in Witten could be huge. It will be interesting to see how he responds with a lot of high expectations set on him and his team for this season.
However, sportsbooks are not giving the Cowboys that much hope as BetOnline Sportsbook has installed the Giants as 4-point favorites in their Week 1 NFL Betting Odds. The OVER/UNDER in points is set at 46 1/2.
The Cowboys vs Giants matchup is set for Wednesday, September 5 with coverage beginning at 8:30 pm ET on NBC.
