The Carolina Panthers were predicted to be one of the breakout teams in 2012. But it was a disappointing effort in the opening week, which got some thinking they might not be quite ready, especially with New Orleans coming to town.
But the Panthers responded with a big win at home over the Saints, and now prepare for the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants to visit on Thursday night in primetime, in what is one of the marquee matchups of the entire third week.
The Giants responded with a Week 2 win as well following an opening loss, as both Carolina and New York avoided falling into an 0-2 hole. However, falling to 1-2 wouldn’t be much better, as the the loser of this game will find themselves in that exact position.
So how do the odds stack up?
Panthers vs Giants Week 3 betting odds available at Bovada Sportsbook have installed the New York as 1.5-point favorites on the road over Carolina. To cover, the Giants will need to win by at least two points, with a win by one point or a loss straight up obviously resulting in a victory against the spread for the Panthers.
If Carolina is to pull the upset, it will likely start with the performance of quarterback Cam Newton. Big things are still expected from Newton this season in his follow up to an impressive rookie campaign. Newton threw for 253 yards and a touchdown in the win over the Saints at home last Sunday. And in a short week of preparation, he will have to get ready for a very tough and aggressive Giants defense.
Though that wasn’t evidenced by giving up 34 points to the Bucs last week. However, Eli Manning and the New York offense did make it easier on them by racking up over 600 yards of offense. Manning threw for 510 yards, 300 of which were in the second half.
This will be the first road game of the season for the Giants, so it will be interesting to see how they play after getting the first two at home.
