The Washington Redskins and Robert Griffin III will go on the road in Week 1 of the 2012 NFL Season to the Louisiana Superdome to take on the New Orleans Saints in a compelling season opener.
Obviously Griffin’s debut is highly anticipated, as both the Redskins organization and fans alike believe that he might be the answer and the missing piece to the playoff puzzle for the team. We will get a good sense of just how good he could be this season on Sunday.
On the other side of the field for New Orleans, it has been a tumultuous offseason, in which they have endured more off-the-field distractions than any other team around the league. But with the Bounty scandal nwo behind them, the Saints will try to move forward into the 2012 season.
Oddsmakers don’t see Washington coming into the Superdome and stealing a victory from the Saints on Sunday.
Redskins vs Saints Betting Odds available at Bovada Sportsbook have set New Orleans as 7.5-point favorites over Washington at home. That means that the Saints will need over a touchdown and an extra point victory to cover the betting line over the Redskins. A New Orleans win by eight points or more will cover, with a win by seven points or less for the Saints giving the Redskins the victory against the spread.
Oddsmakers are expecting some points to be put up here in this game as well, with the over/under total installed at 50 points.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees will try to follow up a season in which he surpassed Dan Marino for the all-time most passing yards in a season. He was thus rewarded with the richest contract in the NFL in the offseason, though it did take more time than Saint fans would have liked. Still, big things are expected from this teams in 2012.
The big question will be whether or not the absence of head coach Sean Payton will affect the team on the field.
As for this matchup, Griffin against the Saints defense will probably be what everyone is interested and tuning in for. Should be a good one to watch.
New Orleans and Washington kick off at 1pm ET, with regional coverage picked up by FOX. Check out the betting odds for this game, as well as the rest of the Week 1 slate below.
