When it comes to the 2012 Olympics, there is a rivalry in swimming between two athletes at the summit of the sport.
That would be Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.
Coming into the London Olympics, that rivalry has certainly been kicked up a notch with the recent success of Lochte on the world stage, upending Phelps in several races that Phelps used to dominate.
Phelps, who is the greatest Olympic champion in history with 14 gold medals, dominated the 2008 Beijing Games, much at the expense of Lochte. And while Lochte did taste Gold in 2008, he was still in the large shadow that Phelps cast. But since 2008, the balance of power has shifted to Lochte. There was some talk even that Phelps would not compete in the 2012 games and retire at the age of 27. But Lochte’s success has fueled Phelps and his training, and the two appear on a collision course of titans in a couple of weeks when the Games start.
Oddsmakers have jumped all over the action between Phelps and Lochte in several events in which they are slated to compete against each other.
The 200m and 400m Individual Medley at the two events in which Phelps and Lochte are going to go head-to-head, and London Olympic Odds have set down lines for each. The odds are going the way of Lochte.
For Lochte, it’s the 400m IM in which he is getting the edge over Phelps, though the betting line is quite close. Lochte is an 8/11 favorite to claim gold in this event, for which Phelps won back in 2008. But it’s not like Phelps is really the underdog, going off at Even money on the amount wagered. The final for this event will take place on Saturday July 28 at 7:30 pm local time in London.
Then in the 200m IM, the betting odds are just about as close. Lochte is going off at 4/5 on the amount wagered, while it’s just over even money for Phelps to win gold going off at 11/10 on the payout. The 200m IM final will be held on Thursday August 2, at 8:15pm local time.
There is no doubt that Team USA is energized by these two athletes at the top of their sport, giving us all something to look forward to when watching these 2012 London Games. It should be very exciting, and you can bet these eyes will be glued to the television when these races, as well as all of the other races that these two are in go down.
