Two of the top favorites going into the 2012 NFL Season matchup in Week 1, when the Green Bay Packers host the San Francisco 49ers. There were 28 regular season wins between these two teams in 2011.
Not too bad.
As for this matchup in Week 1 on Sunday afternoon, the Packers are getting the edge from oddsmakers on the betting line to get out to a winning start. Being at home in Lambeau Field certainly helps.
Green Bay vs San Francisco Week 1 NFL betting odds available at Bovada Sportsbook have set the Packers as five-point favorites over the 49ers. To cover, Green Bay will need to win by at least six points, with a win by four points or less giving the 49ers the victory against the spread.
The Packers tabbed a 15-1 regular season record in the regular season in 2011, but laid an egg in the playoffs, going one-and-done. It was the 49ers who surprised most by winning 13 games and making it to the NFC championship game. San Francisco actually hosted the game, but lost a close one to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
The expectations for both of these teams have not diminished. In fact, they are the top-two favorites in the NFC to reach New Orleans for Super Bowl XLVII.
Week 1 can always be a bit of a guess as far as which teams will come out and play well. But with Aaron Rodgers on the side of the Packers, it has to give them a bit of an edge. As good as the San Francisco defense was in 2011, Rodgers has been playing on a different level, winning his first MVP award.
You can bet that the more exciting offense vs defense matchup in this game will be the Packers offense against the 49ers defense.
However, the more important matchup might be the opposite. San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith had the best season of his career in 2011, and it will be interesting to see how he follows that up. Smith has plenty of weapons surrounding him, including the new addition of Randy Moss to the lineup. But with Michael Crabtree on the outside, and arguably the best tight end in football in Vernon Davis, they present some matchup problems for the Green Bay defense.
This one kicks off at 4:25 pm ET on Sunday, with coverage picked up by FOX. Check out the betting line for this game, as well as the rest of the NFL Week 1 slate on Bovada below.
