Florida Gators A Surprise No.2 In Initial BCS Standings Released

Filed under: NCAA Football Betting Odds |

The first edition of the 2012 BCS standings in college football were released on Sunday evening, so let the debate begin.

The first rankings were not without some surprise either. Not at the top, as that title we knew would go to Alabama. It came in the very next position.

The Oregon Ducks have been the consensus No.2 team in the polls behind Alabama for the last several weeks, looking dominant on the offensive side of the ball. But when the BCS standings were released on Sunday, they did not find themselves in the second slot.

Insert another SEC team.

Of course, that should come as a surprise to you, as the SEC occupied the top-two spots in the BCS standings for most of last season. So it only seems fitting that the conference which has won the last six BCS championships should start out 1-2. They still dominate the top-10 BCS Championship Odds as well.

The team that is in that spot would be the Florida Gators. And while the eye test might lean towards Oregon, the resume’ definitely leans towards Florida. the Gators have notched some big SEC road wins, as well as a potential program-turning victory at home over LSU two weeks ago. The Gators are No.2 in the first BCS rankings, but will have that ranking put to the test each of the next two games.

First, it’s a home game against the No.9 South Carolina Gamecocks, coming off of a tough loss on the road to LSU. Then the next week it’s the cocktail Party in Jacksonville against No.13 Georgia. So we will find out a lot about Florida, and if they are able to win those then not only are they deserving of No.2, they should probably leap Alabama for the No.1 ranking in the country.

Behind Alabama, Florida, and Oregon, the Kansas State Wildcats and the Notre Dame Fighting irish round out the top-five.

Of the top-25 teams, they are largely dominated by the SEC and Big 12, both conferences which have seven teams in these initial standings.
