The one thing about the college basketball season that seems to hold true year-in- and year-out is the fact that top-tier matchups take place early on in the season. While college football might not have as many marquee out-of-conference matchups as fans would like, the same cannot be said for college basketball.
This is evident beginning on Tuesday night, just a few days into the new season. A top-five contest between No.1 Kentucky and No.5 Kansas anchors a slate that has several ranked showdowns on the schedule.
It doesn’t get any bigger this early in the season than the Wildcats and Jayhawks though.
Kentucky opened up their season on Friday against Grand Canyon (not the landmark), and of course cruised to an easy win. Then they followed that up with a victory over Buffalo. Now, the national runner up team from a year ago can expect to get all they can handle on Tuesday night with Kansas coming to town.
It’s tough to gauge exactly how good both teams are at this point. The Wildcats returns several key players from last season’s run, which is why they are at the top of the polls at the onset of the season. Kansas lost Andrew Wiggins to the draft, but the Jayhawks have no problem recruiting.
The early point spread for Kansas vs. Kentucky at BetOnline Sportsbook have the Wildcats as 5.5-point favorites. This game will be played on a neutral court at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, so there is no home advantage for either team here.
Prior to the tip on ESPN between the pair of top-five teams at 9pm ET, another equally interesting game gets going at 7pm ET. That would be No.4 vs. No.19 Michigan State, which will also be played in Indianapolis.
This highly anticipated matchup puts two programs on the floor that have been among the most consistent in recent memory. It’s Duke that gets the edge on the betting lines in this one. The Blue Devils are set as seven-point favorites, but it’s really anyone’s game.
While many of the top-25 teams will be in action throughout the week, the Champions Classic which will house these two games is definitely the premier event.
