The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia are fast approaching, and arguably the biggest event of the games is already garnering plenty of attention weeks before it even starts! The men’s ice hockey tournament is a signature event at every Winter Olympics and with the games in Russia this year, there is an added measure of significance given the rich history and popularity of the game within the country.
While the Russian Men’s National Team is considered to be a top contender to win the gold medal, they are not the overall favorites. That distinction goes to the Canadian Men’s National Team which enters the 2014 Winter Olympics as the three-time defending gold medalist – Vancouver (2010), Turin (2006), and Salt Lake City (2002). This really doesn’t come as much surprise though because there simply isn’t a country where hockey is more popular, and it’s evident in the world-class talent produced there.
Installed as a 2 to 1 favorite to repeat as gold medalists, those who wager on Team Canada stand to win double the amount they risk which really isn’t too bad of a bet. Chock-full of NHL talent, Team Canada will be led by the biggest names in the sport such as Sidney Crosby and Roberto Luongo. But while the Canadian Men’s Hockey team is a force to be reckoned with, don’t give them the gold medal just yet because the host nation might have something to say about that!
With +225 odds to win the gold medal (9/4), Russia is hot on the heels of the Canadian team even though they have not medaled in Men’s Ice Hockey since the 2002 Salt Lake City games (bronze). In fact, Russia hasn’t won the gold medal in this sport since being part of the Olympic powerhouse that was the Soviet Union with their highest finish coming at the 1998 Nagano games (silver).
If you’re wondering where the 2010 silver medalists are in this mix, the Americans are sitting in 4th place with 6 to 1 odds (+600); Sweden is 3rd with 4 to 1 odds (+400). Like Team Canada, the United States will be represented by plenty of NHL talent as well. Names like Patrick Kane and Ryan Miller will be on the United States’ roster which might not seem all that impressive at first, but let’s not forget what the Americans did in 1980 at the Lake Placid games… Miracle On Ice anyone?

2014 Winter Olympics – Men’s Hockey Group Betting Odds
Outside of the overall betting lines to win the gold medal in Men’s Ice Hockey, Bodog has formed group odds as well. Each group consists of four teams to begin play. Teams matched within groups will play each other looking to advance into the medal rounds. There are three groups total, with each team installed with a payout to win their respective group. LatestBettingOdds.com has those odds directly below:
Those interested in group betting can also parlay the set. Payouts for a wager made on all three group winners are set by Bodog. Taking the favorites from all three (Canada, Russia, and Sweden) for example would pay out 37/20 (just under 2 to 1). There are eight different combinations of winners formed for the parlay option, all the way down to a 69/2 betting line for USA, Finland and the Czech Republic to win the groups.
