The SEC is known for being a powerhouse in college football, with basketball taking a back seat. And while it’s clear that the SEC only has a couple of contenders to win the NCAA Tournament later this year, one in particular sits on top of the favorites to cut down the nets at Cowboys Stadium.
The Florida Gators have been a force to be reckoned with throughout this season, losing only twice and owning a perfect conference record. And with Syracuse losing twice last week the Gators will be the new No.1 team when the polls are released later today.
Florida hasn’t lost a game since December 2 to UConn by one point. Since that loss, it’s been 19-straight victories, the latest of which came Saturday on the road against Ole Miss. The Gators have just four regular season games remaining until the start of the conference tournament. The regular season finale at home against No.18 Kentucky looks to be the biggest challenge. Tough road games against Vanderbilt and South Carolina are never easy though.
Florida tops the list of favorites to win the 2014 college basketball championship according to Bovada Sportsbook. As long as the Gators do not stumble home they will be guaranteed a No.1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. At 5/1, Florida has separated itself slightly from the rest of the country.
Despite the two losses this week, Syracuse still remains a top contender. At 15/2, they are behind only the Gators as the overall championship favorites.
The team that the orange most-recently lost to on Saturday is right behind, in the Duke Blue Devils. Duke lost on Thursday to North Carolina, but rebounded nicely for the win over Syracuse to right the ship. The Blue Devils sit at 8/1 along with the Kansas Jayhawks out of the Big 12.
There is still one undefeated team out there, which seems to get lost in the mix because they come from a smaller conference. The Wichita State Shockers are perfect on the season, but are outside of the top-five championship favorites. The Shockers shouldn’t be a team off the radar though, afterall they did make the Final Four last season as a No.9 seed. They are simply piggybacking off of that great run. Wichita State has just a few games remaining to complete the perfect mark, and then go into conference tournament play where they have a realistic shot at a No.1 seed.
