The Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball team captured the national championship on Monday night, and now the women will get their opportunity to do that as well, facing the Connecticut Huskies on Tuesday night for the national title. Unlike the men’s team though, the Lady Cardinals come into this national championship matchup as the heavy underdog against the mighty Huskies. This championship game tips at 8:30pm ET from New Orleans, with coverage on ESPN.
Both Louisville and UConn are very familiar with each other, coming out of the Big East conference. The two teams met only once this season though, back on January 15. That was a game played at Connecticut, and won by the Huskies 72-58. It’s safe to say though that the Cardinals are playing much better in their run through the NCAA Tournament as a No.5 seed.
Louisville knocked off No.1 overall seed Baylor in the Sweet 16, so a game against UConn for the national title doesn’t seem all that intimidating.
That hasn’t stopped oddsmakers from setting the Huskies as 14-point favorites on the Women’s NCAA Tournament championship game lines installed at BetOnline Sportsbook. It’s clear that the odds favor a big win by UConn, and yet another national championship for this college basketball powerhouse.
But don’t sleep on Louisville. They have gone through a very impressive stretch to reach this point. Not only did the Cardinals defeat Brittney Griner and Baylor, they also knocked off Tennessee in the Elite 8. And when it comes to women’s college basketball, it doesn’t get any bigger than Baylor, Tennessee, and UConn. A win over the Huskies might cap off the great tournament in history for any one women’s team.
As for the Huskies, they exacted their revenge on a Notre Dame team that ousted them from the Big East tournament championship back on March 12. UConn cruised to an 83-65 victory to stamp their ticket to the national championship game. It was impressive, because three of the four losses that the Huskies have on the season came at the hands of Notre Dame, so the Huskies were able to shake off those demons and win when it mattered the most.
LatestBettingOdds looked at the betting line for this one, and UConn will need to win by at least 15 points if you are looking to place a wager on them for the title. Louisville on the other hand is getting plenty of points in the role of the underdog, and can cover with a loss by 13 points or less. And as well as the Cardinals have been playing this tournament, it looks like a very appealing line to go after if you are in favor of taking the underdog.
